Urundai Curry

Urundai curry is a typical south-indian side dish that can be had with dosa, appam or rice.

Ingredients

Gingelly oil – 1 Tbsp
Mustard seeds – 1/2 Tsp
Urad dal – 1 Tsp
Cumin seeds – 1/2 Tsp
Onion – 2 nos chopped
Green chili – 2 nos slit
Few Curry leaves
Ginger garlic paste – 1/2 Tsp
Tomato – 2 nos chopped
Turmeric powder – 1/4 Tsp
Chili powder – 2 Tsp
Coriander powder – 2 Tsp
Water – 2 cups
Salt to taste

For Chana Dal Balls (Urundai)
Chana Dal – 1 cup
Red chili – 4 nos
Cumin seeds – 1/2 Tsp
Fennel seeds – 1/2 Tsp
Water
Salt to taste
Oil for frying

Method

1. Soak chana dal with red chilies, cumin seeds, fennel seeds for about 2 hours
2. After about 2 hours, drain the water and grind the chana dal with a little salt into a coarse mixture
3. Heat some oil and add the chana dal mixture in the form of small balls and deep fry them
4. Keep these aside and heat some oil in a kadai
5. Add some mustard seeds, urad dal, cumin seeds, chopped onions, green chilies and curry leaves
6. Saute the onions till they are golden brown in color, add ginger garlic paste and chopped tomatoes
7. Add salt, turmeric powder, chili powder and coriander powder and cook the tomatoes till they are mushy
8. Add water and boil the curry for about 10 minutes
9. Add the fried chana dal balls and boil the curry for another 10 minutes
10. Garnish the Urundai Curry and serve it hot
